August 1-2, 2020
with performers in
Melbourne, Perth and Berlin
21:00-21:00 AEST
19:00-19:00 AWST
13:00-13:00 CEST
Phonetic Orchestra has developed a practice involving durational performances, collaborative
approaches to composition and the integration of improvisation within compositional structures. Their
latest endeavour, Silent Towns, will further explore these interests. A 24-hour live-stream event will
feature ensemble members based in Melbourne, Berlin and York (Western Australia).
In this latest endeavour, Silent Towns proposes musical listening that can dipped in and out of over a
24-hour period. It aims to cut through the vast noise and pace of online media and offer a relatively
rare occurrence of events that are both in real-time and offer respite. Following the Phonetic
Orchestra’s ethic of democratising composer-performer relationships, the music for this performance
is being developed through an extensive collaborative process.
We acknowledge that parts of this performance are taking place on unceded land whose custodians are the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation, as well as land whose custodians are the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We pay respects to their Elders past, present and future.
